While in the process of choosing and engine, I tried to pick one that looked good, but also learned about its history. I ended getting really lucky on Craigslist, and found a pair of identical M52: it was produced at the end of the 90s, which is when BMW moved from cast iron blocks to aluminum, the latter being much lighter which is important, because an engine is heavy. Depending on how many parts are still in it (camshaft, pistons) it can be several hundred pounds. You will need a friend or two to help you carry it, and presumably a very sturdy dolly.

Quite simply, there’s nothing good to say about the RX-8 in terms of fuel economy. Although the buyer may not necessarily view this as a negative point, without passing emissions there is no car to buy.
